Jack and the Bean Stock
Scene 1 - King’s Palace
Open to outside a castle. Outside in the garden works a young boy, Jack. Jack is cleaning a cow as he does the Princess walks around him, teasing him.
Princess: Jack be nimble, Jack be quick…
Jack: Princess Teresa.
Princess: Oh come now Jack, you know I’m joking. Hehe.
Jack: Princess Teresa I-
Princess: Jack, you know I don’t like you calling me Princess. Just call me Teresa, princess of Illyria Kingdom.
Jack: I really need to be getting this finished. Your father, he demanded it be done today.
Princess: My father? Pitty… And I wanted to go play at the lake. Won’t you come with me Jack?
Jack: I really need to get this done.
The Princess takes Jack’s hand and pulls him away from the cow. As she does the King storms in and pulls the Princess away.
King: Teresa! Don’t touch that boy! My gosh Teresa, you are a princess, hire to the Illyrian thrown and what is he?
Princess: A friend!
King: He is no more then a common laboring boy! Thick boots, coarse hands… You are better then that. You deserve a knight!
Princess: Father!
The King turned to Jack, who had his head held low during the twos bickering. The King hit Jack on the head with his scepter in hand.
King: Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack! Stay away from my daughter; you are nothing but a peasant working on the farm with the animals, NOT MY FIRST BORN CHILD!
Jack: Yes, sir. Of course. Sir. Your highness.
The King motioned for Jack to leave, and so he did. Curtains close.
Scene 2 - Jack’s Home
Open to Jack walks into a small house with worn out walls, stained with dirt and other things. Jack is welcomed by his mother.
Jack’s Mother: Jack oh Jack, where have you been? You were supposed to be home an hour ago!
Jack: I know, I know.
Jack’s Mother: I need you to go to the market for me.
Jack: Mom!
Jack’s Mother: We have no money and we need food. I want you to go to the King’s palace and steal one of his cows.
Jack: What? Mom! I can’t steal the King’s cattle!
Jack’s Mother: Just one cow. Go and sell one cow! But make sure you get the best deal. Don’t be coming back with a hand full of copper coins! Bring back golds and silvers! Jack! Go to the market and SELL the cow! If you don’t sell it, you are not welcomed back into this house!
Jack walked out of the house with a grunt. Jack’s Mother sighed.
Jack’s Mother: That boy…
Curtains close.
Scene 3 - Outside the King’s Palace
Curtains open, Jack quietly walks into the barn and spots the large cow. Jack takes the cow and slowly leaves but as he does the cow starts to moo, extremely loudly. Jack covers his hands over the cow’s face.
Jack: Shh! Be quite!
Jack runs off pulling the cow with him. Curtains close.
Scene 4 - Market Place
Open to Jack with the cow. He has a sign set up with the writing “COW 4 SALE”.
Jack: Cow! Cow for sale! A cow for sale!
A man in a dark cloak walks up to Jack with a bag.
Mysterious Man: A cow?
Jack: Yes! Beautiful, firm and tough!
Mysterious Man: The cow looks good. Tough and strong. I have a great deal for you.
Jack: A deal?
Mysterious Man: I will trade you that cow for my bag of magical beans.
Jack: Magical Beans?
Jack’s Mother pops up behind Jack’s head.
Jack’s Mother: If you don’t sell it, you are not welcomed back into this house!
Jack: Well… she did say to sell it… What kind of magical beans?
Mysterious Man: These beans were grown in a magical land called Enyank City.
Jack: The city of Enyank?
Mysterious Man: Yes, a city inhabited by a giant. The gate way to the city is a giant bean stock that guides into the stars. The giant possesses one goose.
Jack: A goose? Is it a like a 10foot goose?
Mysterious Man: No, it is a normal sized goose, but the goose lays solid gold eggs!
Jack: Ouch.
Mysterious Man: The giant also owns a magical gold harp, which always seems to be playing a soothing melody.
Jack: I’ll take them! Give me! Give Me!
Jack lets go of the cow and grabs the beans and runs off in joy. The Mysterious Man lets out a low laugh as Jack runs in joy. Curtain Closes.
Scene 5 - Jack’s House
Open to Jack running to his house with the bag of beans. Jack’s mother looks to him at the bag.
Jack’s Mother: Jack! How much did you make?
Jack: Well you… You said to sell it right?
Jack’s Mother: Yes?
Jack: Well… I sold it for a bag of Magic Beans!!!
Jack’s Mother hits Jack over the head with a frying pan.
Jack’s Mother: Stupid, Stupid, Stupid Boy! How dare you sell the cow for a bag of stupid beans.
Jack: Their magical!
Jack’s Mother: There is no such thing as magical beans! I said money not magical fruit!
Jack’s Mother grabs the beans and throws them out the window, the beans fall out of the bag and land in the dirt.
Jack: The Beans!
Jack’s Mother: Go to bed and tomorrow you will go steal ANOTHER cow and sell them for real money!
Jack: But the beans I have to get them or the animals will eat them.
Jack’s Mother: Leave the beans! They are not magical, no magic! Magic isn’t real Jack. I am really mad that you failed me again… Just go to bed.
Jack went to his room. Curtains close.
Scene 6 - Outside
Outside Jack’s house, the beans start to glow and glitter. Things start to rumble as the beans start to grow into a large long bean stock. The bean stock grows up into the stars, causing birds to caw and things to rumble. Curtains close.
Scene 7 - Jack’s House
Curtains open to Jack walking around in his house. Jack runs to the window to see the bean stock. Jack calls out to his mother, who doesn’t come to see.
Jack: Hmm… I wonder what’s up here.
Jack goes outside and starts to climb the stalk. Jack slowly starts to climb not knowing when this would stop. Jack finds himself in the clouds, and in front of him stands a giant palace.
Jack: That man was right. A castle. Then that means there is a goose and… and a golden harp!
Jack is about to walk to the castle when from inside the castle walks out a large giant.
Giant: ArRg!
Jack’s eyes pop out and he quickly runs down the bean stock. Curtains close.
Scene 8 - King’s Palace Inside
Jack runs into the king’s castle. There stands the King, the Princess and the Knight. Jack runs to the king.
Jack: King! King!
King: What is it now Jack? I am busy at the moment, I’m on the search for my prize cow. Have you seen it?
Jack: Cow… No, I haven’t seen a cow… no. King, there is a giant.
Princess: A giant? Oh my! Daddie!
Knight: A giant? Ha! You wish…
Jack: It’s true! There is a giant up in the clouds!
Knight: I think you should leave.
Jack: What? No, it’s true!
King: Leave this place now Jack!
Jack: But-
Knight: Do I have to remove you?
Jack: No! I can find my own way out…
Jack grunts walking out of the room. The Princess turns to her father and pleads to him.
Princess: Daddy! You have to listen to Jack!
King: Teresa …
Princess: Daddy! Listen to him, he must be right, Jack doesn’t lie!
King: Teresa! Go to your room and we will not talk about this any further!
Knight: I could assist you if you really want, Princess.
Princess: Really no.
The Princess storms out of the room following Jack’s direction. The King turns to the Knight and holds up his scepter.
King: Knight, I declare you to keep an eye on my daughter. Do not let that dirty boy touch her, not one touch. Understand?
Knight: Of course!
King: She is my oldest and dearest child. Unlike her other sisters, Tiffany, Tara, Terri, Tasha, Torri, Tina, Tammy, Timmy, Talia, Tineesha, Tayia and Tess, she is very hard headed. She won’t say no for a simple answer.
Knight: I understand. An unlike your other daughters, she is the most eye appealing.
The Knight ran off in the direction that the Princess and Jack went. Curtains close.
