Koishikawa Miki Miki is a junior in high school when the show begins. She is not seen as very beautiful but has a wonderful personality. She is also easily hurt and takes people at face value. Her emotions rule her life. Her personality is what draws people to her. Not only the guys in her life but also her friends, especially Meiko , her best friend. Miki is honest and trustworthy and can't tell a lie to save her life. People see right through her so she does not try to be anything other than herself. Miki has been in love with Ginta since middle school and he loves her too but certain circumstances prevented them from being together (hmm...maybe for a purpose?). Then she meets the guy who is going to be her step-brother and falls for him. When Ginta realizes that there is going to be competition, he decides to show Miki how much he loves her. Miki is confused and has to decide (because Ginta is pushing her to) between Ginta and Yuu . Not wanting to hurt Ginta, she keeps asking for more time. Miki is in the tennis club (along with Ginta) and you can actually see how she develops her tennis abilities during the span of the series. She also has an exchange diary that she exchanges with Meiko (we see her writing in this almost every episode) and this is how Miki shares her secrets with Meiko. Miki also has a robot voice recorder that she leaves messages (and receives messages) for people she cares about. The robot voice recorder plays an important role in the show.

Matsuura Yuu Yuu is the son of the couple that switches partners with Miki's parents. He is very unemotional in the earlier episodes and seems to really be cold and unfeeling. We realize soon though, that he just hides his emotions behind his smiles. He teases Miki unmercifully and at first it seems that he thinks Miki is just a pesky kid. As it turns out, he is just hiding his feelings for her. Women are very attracted to Yuu. We see Arimi, Suzu, Anju and Jinny all try to win Yuu's love but he only has eyes for Miki. Although he is not mean to these ladies, he is firm in letting them know that Miki is the only one for him. His main competition for Miki in the early episodes is Ginta . In episode 2, we actually seen concern on Yuu's face as she is staring at Ginta while remembering the past. Starting in the middle episodes and all the way to the end, Kei is introduced as competition for Yuu. He is very immature at first and it's obvious that Miki doesn't care for him in a romantic way but he goes away for 11 episodes and returns a changed man. Then he becomes a real challenge for Yuu. Yuu's hobbies are architecture and teasing Miki. In middle school, he was on the tennis club and he is excellent at sports (especially basketball). Because of his love for architecture, he spends a lot of time at the old library on the school campus. There he researches works by Gaudi and other famous architects as well as works by Miwa. At the library is where he meets Miwa Satoshi , the son of the architect. Miwa becomes Yuu's best friend. At first, Yuu thinks that Miwa is gay because of the library incident and soon the whole school thinks that they are a couple! Miki just can't believe it but then she decides that they just look too good together and thinks that Miwa is her biggest competition for Yuu. Yuu blossoms as a character and especially in the earlier episodes where we see him trying to cheer Miki up. Although he isn't very likable in the beginning, we start to warm up to him when he takes Miki to a lake to take her mind off her problems and when he jumps balconies to stop her from crying. In episode 25 where he finally confesses his love for her, we find that because of a traumatic event in his childhood, he has a hard time opening up to people. This shows Miki that his love for her is very strong and that it will take a lot for it to be broken. In his spare time, Yuu works at the Junk Jungle where we meet his boss, Kijima. Kijima is a former student at Toryo High and is a great confidant to Yuu. We also learn at the Junk Jungle about the power of the Toryo Medallion. Kijima is the one person who knows that when Yuu is upset about something, he asks for a cup of coffee (see the Marmalade Boy Movie).

Suou Ginta Ginta is Miki's best male friend and has been in love with her since middle school. Things happened that prevented them from being together, though. Ginta is warm, loving and has a fiery temper. In episode 2 Miki says that although he has a hot temper, it's easy to cool him down. Ginta and Miki get along wonderfully until he lets her know that he loves her and forces a kiss in episode 3. Then Miki wants nothing to do with him. But, leave it to Ginta to fight for her and eventually she forgives him. Ginta realizes immediately that Yuu is going to be trouble for him and Miki. In the early episodes, it doesn't look like Ginta is going to have a chance with Miki so he teams up with Arimi (at her request) to make Miki jealous. This works because all Miki can think about is Ginta and Arimi. Yuu is there to help her, though. In episode 23, Ginta finally realizes that he probably lost Miki to Yuu for good and he confides in Arimi about this. In episode 26, Miki tells Ginta that her and Yuu are now a couple. Ginta is upset but not really surprised. He tells Miki that if Yuu ever hurts her, he will make him pay for it. He will hold that anger in him until then. Having decided that, he tells her, he feels much better. In episode 32, Ginta and Arimi attend the school festival together. We see them finally go on a real date in episode 36. They share their first kiss in the Christmas episode. Once Ginta and Arimi stop going after Miki and Yuu, they turn out to be some of the most loved characters of the show. Ginta and Miki remain good friends throughout the series and are there for each other when they start having relationship problems.

Akizuki Meiko Meiko is Miki's best friend. They have been friends since they met in seventh grade. Meiko is very, very rich. Her parents hate each other but won't divorce because of financial situations. Neither wants to take responsibility for Meiko, so she has spent most of her life feeling unwanted. She protects her feelings and heart until it almost drives Miki away from her. Meiko is a great listener and always has some advice for Miki when she needs it. She also has a very dry sense of humor. We realize the depth of Meiko's need for Miki in episodes 45-48 when Miki takes the role as the strong one of the two. Meiko is very supportive of Miki when she can't make up her mind between Yuu and Ginta . She describes Yuu as "A breath of fresh air" for Miki. Meiko has a forbidden romance with her teacher, Namura-sensei, and has been dating him since she was 15. They met in the school library and after 6 months, confessed their feelings for each other. When he finds out that he is going to be teaching her class, he tells her they have to stop dating until she graduates. Everyone finds out Meiko's secret in episode 15 and Namura leaves in episode 17. While Namura is gone, Miwa Satoshi makes a play for Meiko's heart. At first she is unresponsive but then she starts to soften up towards him as he encourages her to write. Miwa enters her story into a writing contest and Meiko wins. He kisses her on their first date in episode 22 and leaves Meiko stunned. Meiko kisses him a later episode when he returns a story she wrote and he read. Their love is cut off, though, when Namura sends a telegram to the congratulatory party and leaves Meiko stunned. She goes to Hiroshima episode 45 and confronts Namura. Meiko is portrayed as the beautiful one of all the girls. She is supposed to be the most mature and every guy in school knows who she is and is interested in dating her. She refuses all dates because of Namura.
