...Chapter 1...
"Mummy, can Sarah and I go outside to play?"
"Of course, Kevin, I want you both back inside before the sun goes down, understood?"
"Yes, Mother." "Yes Mummy."
"And no going into the woods... There's wolves out there."
As Kevin and I left the house to the backyard, I dropped my bracelete into my pocket. The bracelete was silver and had charms of angels and flowers of spring. Father had given it to me a couple of years ago when I was 13. He told me it was real silver. And that he loved me very much.
My name is Sarah Wells. I am now 15 and my duty is to watch Kevin while Mother takes care of the house and runs her sewing buisness. Father is at work most of the time, minning for coal. So that leaves Kevin and I alone. I have dark brown eyes, and light brown hair.
Kevin is only 6. He has light brown hair, and light brown hair. He's a bit short even for 6, and acts like he's 4. He also loves Animals. He is always begging for a dog or a cat, but Mother just wont give in. She says they cost too much. I think she just doesn't want to put up with it.
Behind our house is a giant wood. Sometimes I would be awakened by eerie noises from these woods. Even in the daylight, they frighten me.
"Kevin, don't wander off!"
My brother was chasing after a frog that was frantically hopping away.
But suddenly he stopped, his gaze fixed on the forest. "Kevin... what is it that your looking at?"
He didn't answer me but began to walk towards the woods. The frog he was chasing hopped off.
"Kevin! We are not allowed in the woods remember?"
I walked closer to see what it was that had my brother's attention so well to stop him from chasing a frog.
A wolf. A strange, grey wolf.
"Look Sarah! A dog!"
My brother frantically began to run towards it.
"Kevin! That's a wolf stay back!" I said chasing him towards the woods.
The wolf didn't growl, but stared with it's yellow eyes and then turned slowly walking deeper into the woods.
"I wonder if Father would let me keep him!"
"KEVIN! NO!"
Kevin ran into the woods, following the wolf. I followed after him, but my skirt kept catching on the weeds.
"Kevin, wait!"
"Here, doggie doggie!" I heard Kevin say, I could hear his footsteps also.
"Kevin! We are not allowed in the woods! Mother said so!" I looked forward, trying to see him, I only saw a lock of brown hair and calm yellow eyes.
I turned my head back to the house, it was becoming distant.
"Kevin! We have to go back!"
I began to concentrate fully on getting to Kevin, I began to run. "Kevin! Let's leave! I'm scared!"
"Sarah I almost have the doggie!"
"Kevin, I can't see you."
My skirt was getting ripped. And my bare legs were getting scratched by the thick bushes. "Kevin, Where are you?"
... There was no answer...
I stopped...
"Kevin? Kevin!? This is not funny anymore..."
...
"KEVIN!"
There was a loud howl.
My heart began to race. The sun was beginning to go down, and the night breeze began to blow softly. The owls began their awakening calls. "Hoot. Hoot."
"Kevin?"
There was still no answer. No reply but the bird's humming.
It was beginning to get cold. I turned around hoping to see my house in the distance. There was nothing but trees.
I turned around and around hoping for the sight of my home. But there was only more bark and autumn leaves.
"Kevin? Kevin!?"
I called again but there was still no answer.
Then the strangest sound came to my ears... It soundled like running water. A stream!
My heart leaped. Perhaps Kevin was there, and couldn't hear my soft voice over the sound of the stream.
I began to run quickly towards the sound of the stream, dodging bushes of thorns as I went.
Night was quickly falling. But I finally reached the stream. It was a beautiful, thin strip of running clear water.
Sadly, there was no Kevin I found as I looked up and down the stream.
I kneeled down beside the stream washing my face, then taking in several gulps of the fresh water.
There was a snap of a twig behind me.
My heart beat increased. I stopped breathing. I was too scared to move, muchless look...
There was another snap of a twig.
"Who's there?" I quickly snapped my head to see. My heart beating louder than ever.
A rabbit... A sigh of relief escaped my lips. It was just a silly white rabbit.
Then I thought of Kevin... he would of chased it... My poor brother. I began to weep and cry. Sobs escaping my mouth as I watched the Rabbit hop away. "Kevin... where are y-you?"
"Why are you crying?"
My head snapped up from my hands. There was a strange man across the stream on the other side.
"M-my brother... I can not find him." A sob escaped my lips and I looked down at my legs, they were bleeding.
"You can't find your brother? How sad..."
I looked up. I gasped, the man was beside me. His gave was pale, his eyes a icey blue, and his hair a short wavy blonde.
"Don't be afraid... I wont hurt you."
His teeth were sharp... very pointy.
I began to move slowly away from him.
"Now, Now... I'm only here to help..."
"T-to help?"
I kept staring at his sharp teeth, then I'd glance at his blue eyes. No man nor boy I had ever seen had such teeth and eyes... Perhaps he was just odd?
"Yes... You should not even be in these woods--"
"Yes because there are wolves?"
"Oh, sweetie... there are much more than wolves." He chuckled and reached over pulling a leaf out of my braided brown hair.
I didn't laugh. I just stared.
"So, what is your name?" He asked.
"Mother told me not to tell anyone, much less talk to strangers."
"Did she?"
"Yes, she did."
"So, you don't want my help them?"
I began to chew on my bottom lip...
"Yes, I suppose I do want your help..."
"I can take you back home."
"But what about my brother?"
The man sighed, "How old is your brother?"
"Six."
... He looked away.
I stared at the man in shock.
He said nothing.
I began to cry again, this time silently.
"The wolves have probably eaten him by now..."
My sobs began to get louder. I hid behind my hands again.
The man layed his hand on my shoulder. I didn't move, it was the warmest thing that had touched me in hours...
The moon was out now; only it and the fireflys lighted the woods. It was beautiful but cold this night.
"Tell me your name."
"Sarah Wells."
"Beautiful for a beautiful girl. My name is James Yule."
I just nodded, my tears had dried finally and the sound of his voice and the stream soothed me.
"Are you ready to go home?"
"How could I return without Kevin...? They wouldn't want me anymore."
"I do not--" "And Kevin could be alive. He's a strong and quick child!"
My heart leaped and so did my whole body.
I hopped up quickly but just as quick dropped back to my knees.
The bleeding had stopped and had scabbed up, but now bruises lined my skin.
"Your in no condition to go anywhere right now. If you like, I'll help you search for your brother."
He un-tied the bow holding my long braid and pulled my hair out.
Normally Mother would have done that before I went to bed. But she wasn't here...
"You can lay down and rest your head on my lap if you wish."
I was too exhausted to complain and tell him Mother would not like me lying my head on a boy's lap, muchless sleeping besides a man.
I did it any how. My eyes began to close... but I stared into his eyes and he looked back into my own dark brown eyes.
I was thankful he was here.
I only hoped Kevin was warm and safe and Mother wasn't worrying too much.
