In one of my manga-buying epidemics (which have become more frequent of late) I was in Forbidden Planet searching for Sailor Moon or the second Fruits Basket (of which they had NEITHER ) when I came across a bright pink book. Ok, the colour caught my eye, but I'd heard of Tokyo Mew Mew before, it's one of the only manga/animes I haven't discovered through CF (it was on a Cosplay site, and the other is Onegai Teacher)... so I thought, why not, it's a pretty popular manga... so I bought it.
It was... ok. The idea of crossing human DNA with endangered animals is new I guess, not heard of it before...
For people that have not heard of it:
"11-year-old Ichigo is out on a hot date with her crush when suddenly she's involved in an odd incident in which her DNA is merged with the DNA of an almost extinct wildcat. When four other girls' DNA is merged with the DNA of four other almost extinct animals, it's apparent that they're part of a much bigger, plan. Ichigo and her friends have been chosen to become part of a secret project called the 'Mew Project'. Their mission: To protect the planet from aliens who are using the planets animals to attack humans. Only time will tell if these supernatural superheroes will be up to the challenge..."
As I said, it's not bad... you meet the first three girls in the first volume... unlike manga like Sailor Moon, they don't have an accessory to transform - it just happens when they're excited or nervous, and to detransform they just have to think about it...
Oh, I quite enjoyed when Ichigo was told she had to look for the mark to see who the other girls were (her own mark was on her inner thigh) and she was going "what if her mark's in the same place as mine!?!?"
The costumes are quite pretty - I love Ichigo's Mew costume... and the cafe uniforms are sweet too... And their names... Ichigo... Mint... and... Lettuce!!!
